Attention Cohort 2 Runners and Families

The location of Saturday’s meet against GW has been moved. We will no longer be running at Bible Park as was announced at practice today. We will instead be running at Lowry Sports Complex, located at 8400 E Lowry Blvd. The course will be set up on the west side of the park next to the tennis courts, and will be a flat and fast 2.5x loop course on mostly grass and gravel path. The coach at GW has asked that spectators park near the tennis courts and watch the race from the soccer fields where they will be able to see the whole race while leaving appropriate space for athletes and each other. There will be just two races, boys starting at 8:00 and girls starting at 8:30. Athletes, please plan to be at the park approximately an hour before you race.

Angels & Demons Dual Meet Results

A dual meet, coaches hand timing, manual calculation of team scores displayed on poster board with mailing labels, and a course meandering around a school campus – for the coaches and parents watching the first meet of the 2020 Angel’s cross country season, it felt like cross country circa 1984; for the East athletes competing on a mercifully cool afternoon, it was their first experience with a low tech dual meet and a preview for most of the rest of this unique season.

The East Angels first experience with a dual meet in a generation was a success by every measure. For the Boys, junior Eamon Nussbaum surged midway through the race to take command and grab his first career win in 18:02. Ninth grader Grant Elliot used a final mile surge to grab third place. Junior Jack Kriekels and sophomore Ben Hopper finished together in 6thand 7thwhile junior Owen Congdon rounded on the team scoring with his 9thplace finish. The Angels totaled 26 points, besting the host Golden Demons by a mere 3 points. In addition to the aforementioned underclassmen, 9thgrader Kai Luna placed 11th, sophomore Ian Logan 13th, 9thgrader Connor Beardsley 15th, and two additional 9thgraders, Elliot Brumbaugh and Nathan Turner went 1stand 2ndin the Cohort 2 race in times that would have finished in the top-15 in the Cohort 1 race; the future of East Cross Country is bright.

The Girls’ race pitted 2019’s 8thplace 5A team against 2019’s 8thplace 4A team. The Angels ran away with a commanding 20 point to 40-point victory over the Demons. Senior Laura Romero led from start to finish in a time of 20:24, followed by fellow senior Julia Schor who nabbed 2ndplace in a spirited finishing kick. Senior Abby Howard finished 4th, followed by juniors Ellison Mucharsky-O’Boyle and Annabel Filippini and senior Maya Nussbaumer in 6th, 7thand 8th. Seniors Grace O’Meara (11th) and Lilia Scudamore (12th), 9thgrader Sophia Shiroff (15th) and junior Gemma Haller (16th) all finished strong in the Cohort 1 race. In the Cohort 2 race, 9thgrader Sasha Bull and junior Alia Quinby led the way in another race dominated by the Angels.

  1. Fill out this google form by Tuesday, 8/25 at midnight.  All runners should fill this out.
  2. Parent volunteers will fill the uniform requests at 3:00pm on Wednesday, 8/26. Click here if you want to help us out:  Uniform Volunteer & other fun opportunities!
  3. Uniforms will be handed out after practice on Wednesday 8/26 to Cohorts 1 & 2.
  4. If an athlete cannot get their uniform on Wednesday, they can pick it up at practice on Thursday from their coach(es).

Remember the team meeting for runners and their parents/guardians tonight, 8/25 at 7:00pm. This will be an overview of the 2020 season.  In past years, this has been a potluck.  This year, we’ll just pretend we are eating the fablous food our families bring to this event!

From Coach Delaney…

Hello running club members! I’m very excited to be working with you! I was impressed with your efforts on Tuesday on a very hot and still somewhat smoky day.  All of us are very upset that we all can’t be together as ONE cohesive team this season. Many of you have worked very hard this summer and many of you also religiously logged your training efforts and are disappointed that you did not make the “top 25” this season.  I don’t blame you and I would be concerned if you were not disappointed.  This is even more disappointing for the seniors in our group!  Unfortunately, disappointment is a part of life that rears its head more often than we like, but there is always a silver lining.  For our group of seniors, in addition to further developing your running, this is a leadership opportunity for you and helps me and East Cross Country develop your teammates for the track season and cross country next fall.  We will also depend on the seniors to help organize and run this group. This opportunity will to develop your leadership skills as well.

Like we did this summer, we will have weekly google meetings, but on Monday afternoons at 6:00 pm.  It would be great if you all could meet and run with each other starting on Wednesday, Aug 26, say on M-W-F at 4:00, in the field north of the statue @ City Park, but this must be done socially and physically distanced!  While running, you do not have to wear a mask, but must remain 6 feet away from each other and as always, respect other park users when running as a group and resect the social/physical distancing of those others as well.  While stretching and doing drills, we must wear our masks.  We will need to follow the same Covid-19 rules that CHSAA and DPS have established for our sport this season.

We will have our virtual meetings every Monday at 6:00 pm, beginning 8/24, just to keep the momentum going. We will work on running goals, may have some additional special guests on occasion as we did this summer, and some socially distanced pre-race picnics in the park.  We hope to also compete in some local races as well.  I suggest we at least continue to meet on Mondays at least through the State Championship in mid-October.  In the past, the running club that meets through the late fall until we have the annual snow-shoe trip just prior to track season.

I hope you all decide to participate in this opportunity.  I’m very excited to work with you!

Best,

Coach Delaney

Virtual Running Club Team

Hey Runners!!

I wanted to state again how impressed and proud we are of all the runners who participated in the time trial, and how sad we are that everyone could not be on the team this season.  Our virtual run club will be led by Coach Delaney and will be a great way to get training plans and a way to stay involved with the team.  The first meeting for the virtual running club will be Thursday, Aug 20 at 5:30pm.  Here is the link for tonight’s meeting:

https://meet.google.com/woy-szsx-ksk

Do not stress if you can’t make the first meeting.  Our regular meetings will be on Mondays at 5:30pm.  You will receive a note from coach Delaney on this site soon.  There will be upcoming events for everyone!

Keep running and thinking happy running thoughts,
