RUNNERS ROOST: Shoe shopping tonight! Hope to see you there.

Recap: Aug 24-25 Cheyenne Mountain and Ram Run

Finally, the East Angels got to start competing. This week’s Varsity and JV-1 teams traveled to the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede to preview the State Meet course against some of the toughest competition in 5A. In fact, of the 20 teams entered, the Girls 5A race featured five of the top-10 teams in the preseason poll and two of the top-10 boys teams battling it out over 5 hilly kilometers on a warm August day in Colorado Springs.

The Girls JV were the first to take to the course. While the JV race was not officially scored, it looked to be a close battle between runners from Denver East, Cherokee Trail, and Fossil Ridge. The Angels had three of the first twelve runners to cross the line, led by sophomore Lilia Scudamore in 22:31, followed closely by senior Lily Cory in 22:43 and sophomore Alana Marie Barros in 22:47. Senior Emily Turner crossed the line in 23:33, ahead of Grace O’Meara, Reese Brogden, and Ellie McWhirter, who each broke 24 minutes over the tough course.

The Varsity Girls race immediately followed the JV. Sophomore Abby Howard and junior Anna Lucy Buddenhagen led the Angels to a 9th place finish of the 20 teams, finishing in 37th and 42nd place respectively with times of 21:52 and 22:01. Junior Elena Thoman finished in 22:30 for 60th place, while sophomores Maya Nussbaumer and Julia Schor rounded out the scoring in 54th (22:52) and 59th (23:02). Making her high school debut, Ellison Mucharsky-O’Boyle finished in 66th in 23:31.

Later in the afternoon, it was the JV Boys turn to toe the line. After more than three tough miles, junior Ballard Kauffman would be the first Angel to cross the line, in time of 20:09. Sophomore Cyrus Jenkins-Nieto would closely follow in 20:14, and senior Jack Thompson would be the next Angel to finish, in 21:39. Junior Taylor Lucas and 9th grader Nick Virnich would also come in under 22 minutes.

For the Varsity Boys, it was juniors Will Daley and Asher Hoyt moving up smartly in the second half of the race to snag podium finishes of 9th and 10th place with times of 17:10 and 17:11 respectively. The next three Angels came across the line separated by only 13 seconds, as sophomore Xander Pacini finished 69th in 19:09, junior Elijah Bruggeman in 72nd in 19:12, and 9th grader Eamon Nussbaum in 79th in 19:22. Junior Riley Nickols survived a fall during the race to finish in 93rd in 19:46, and Jack Beardshear finished 111th in 20:34. The Boys, like the Girls, finished 9th of 20 teams.

The following day, East’s JV-2 scrimmaged against Golden High School and Green Mountain High School at the 10th annual Ram Run 5K hosted by Green Mountain –  where the Angels in attendance saw more hills over 5K than they might see at all the meets for the rest of the season combined. Top performances were turned in by Paul Buffington in 24:04, Kerra Hendrickson in 24:59, Alia Quinby in 25:03, Marcus Burnett in 25:04, Alex Schor in 25:24, and Clara Lorenzo in 25:49. Coaches Miller, Fehrman, and Scudamore also ran the course well. A special shout out to parent Renee Supplee who not only came to pick up the tent, but also dropped a 24:48 for 5K!

Next weekend brings us the Washington Park Invitational on Thursday for most of the team, while Varsity and JV-1 go to the Centaurus Invitational on Saturday.

Tent transport needed Saturday

We really need a parent or parents to take the tent to the meet on Saturday at Green Mountain High School and bring it back. The tent should be there by 8:00 am for a 9:00 start. Text or call Dave at 303-507-6117 to make arrangements. We have 40 runners tomorrow who will be really grateful for the shade.

Thanks for helping our athletes!

Season Launch!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting on Thursday evening.

Here are a few reminders and a few requests:

TENT: The team really needs parents to help bring the team tent to and from meets. It is fine to bring it one way and for another parent to bring it back. You can sign up at this link.

UNIFORM: If your runner would like to own uniform shorts, warm ups, or a team backpack, please follow the link under Gear Shop. You must order by Thursday Aug 30.

SCHEDULE: The team calendar has schedule information and locations of meets as they become available. If you notice anything missing or that looks wrong, please let Jennifer know. You can click on the + on the bottom right corner and add the calendar information to your own device, which should also let you map to meets.

SHOE NIGHT: We have a shopping night fundraiser at Runners Roost on Colorado Blvd. at Mexico on Monday evening. Please RSVP here if you are coming so we can be sure to have enough pizza and staff on hand to help. Runners and families will get a discount on all purchases and the team will get money back.

PICTURE SHARING: Please take pictures if you are at meets and share them at our team page: https://eastcrosscountry2018.shutterfly.com. (You may need to request to join the group).

All these links can be found at link for volunteer opportunities on the website.

We look forward to great meets this weekend!

Thursday’s potluck details have changed!

Runners and Families,

The details for our beginning of the year potluck have changed to do room and scheduling conflicts. It is now just a meeting without a potluck.  Please note the following:

Time:  8:30 pm

Date:  Thursday, August 23, 2018 (same)

Location:  Commons (same)

Potluck:  We decided not to have the potluck due to the late start time of the meeting.  There will be more potlucks throughout the season!  We will serve cookies!

We apologize for the changes and look forward to seeing runners and their parents/guardians on Thursday night.

Parent volunteers:  If you want to help sell swag or check out uniforms, please show up at 7:30 in the hallway by the Commons.

Please note:  If you are running in the meets this weekend, you can pick up your uniform at 7:45pm outside of the Commons before the meeting.  If you are not running in the meets, you can pick up your uniform on Monday after school.

GO ANGELS!!

Attendance Policy

As we head into the competitive season it becomes increasingly important that athletes attend all practices. We would like to remind the team of the attendance policy, as posted on on the policy page of our website. Specifically:

  • Athletes missing a practice for a non-medical or non-academic reason will not be eligible to compete on Varsity that week but may be considered for JV competition.
  • Athletes with two or more absences in a week, excused or unexcused, will not compete in any race that week.
  • Athletes who do miss multiple weeks of races due to multiple unexcused absences will not receive PE credit.

Excused absences are limited to academic conflicts, injury/illness (with note from parent, trainer or doctor) and medical appointments (please make routine dental, orthodontic, and medical appointments outside of practice times whenever possible). Missing practice due to activities that cannot be scheduled for a time outside of practice (other after school activities, work) will only be excused at the coaches’ discretion and with prior approval. Limited exceptions to this policy may be made for students showing evidence of completing the team workout outside of the regularly scheduled practice time.

Correction from the 2nd annual time trial & alumni run recap.  Ira Weiss is from the class of 2016, not 2018.  We apologize for that, but think Ira might appreciate this mistake  several years from now.
