Upcoming events: Week of August 21

East Angel Time Trial 2023 notes and events for this week.

It was a sizzling 95 degrees for this year’s addition of the East Angel 2-mile Time Trial. That kind of heat may not reward runners with fast times, but smart runners adapt their tactics to the conditions and good things happen when you race smart. There was some smart racing on Thursday afternoon.

Senior captains led the way for both the boys and girls, with Connor Beardsley crossing first for the boys and Sophia Shiroff for the girls. Varsity stalwarts as ninth graders, it was no surprise to see Julieta Ochoa and Scout Chomas finish second and third for the girls. Sophomore Tobias Penner, junior Ben Brown, and sophomore Abraham Morginsky were among the top boy JV runners most weeks a year ago, so their strong performance for 2nd , 3rd , and 4th respectively in the boys time trial could also be
considered expected.
During the summer conditioning runs the coaches get a hint of what ninth graders may be ready to contribute at the varsity level, but you never really know until you see the athlete under the stress of competition. Incoming 9 th graders Corrine Kennedey (4th ) and Avery Johnson (5th ) for the girls, and Emery Wagner (5th ) for the boys probably surprised some with their excellent performances under the heat of their first high school competition. For the girls, seniors Sasha Bull and Anna Rothman-Haji and
sophomore Mary Clare Nussbaum placed 6th , 7th and 8th , and for the boys sophomore Isaiah Springer, junior Becker Nelson-Gardner, and sophomore Kyle Kojima took those places.

Those eight boys and girls will join sophomore Henry Bennet, juniors Rosie Mucharsky and Jonas Scudamore, and senior Grace Todd (all of whom had earned a week 1 spot on varsity for finishing in the top-15 at Regionals last year) on the varsity team for what is shaping up to be the very competitive Cheyenne Mountain Stampede on Friday over the State Meet course in Colorado Springs. Runners highlighted in green in our updated results will race in the JV division at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede. All those highlighted in blue will compete in the JV 3000m race at the Washington Park
Invitational on Saturday. Athletes who missed the time trial should speak with the coaches regarding which meet they will race. Details on these meets will be posted later in the week. Please check the Team Calendar (and follow the calendar!).

So Sophomoric! Had the Time Trial been scored as a Battle of the Classes, the Class of 2026 would have prevailed for both the boys and girls, with a mere 32 and 34 points respectively for their top-5 runners.

Spikes Night: Tuesday, August 22 nd at Runners Roost on 1685 S. Colorado.

Team Potluck and Parent/Guardian Meeting: Thursday, August 24 th in the Commons at Denver East HS.
