9/8-9/9 Recap: Liberty Bell and St. Vrain

Week three of the East Angel’s cross country season kicked off at the 40th Annual Liberty Bell Invitational at Heritage High School in Littleton. Teams from around the region go to Liberty Bell for the promise of fast times on the mostly flat and hard surfaced course, and despite warmer than ideal temperatures, fast times were delivered by the Angels.

Running at full strength for the first time this season, the Boys Varsity were off the line first. Harrison Scudamore led the Angels with a 5K personal record of 15:28 for 4th place, five seconds off the winning time. Harrison was followed by Asher Hoyt (38th, 16:41), Will Daley (87th, 17:42), Jackson Adams (104th, 18:01), and Ian Trautwein (124th, 18:18) who all ran personal best times. Together they totaled 357 points for 16th place of 25 schools in the large school division.

The Girls Varsity closely followed the boys, and were again led by Laurel Kruger who shattered her previous best time for 5K by 43 seconds on her way to a 19:27 finish for 31st place. Laurel was backed up by Nell Salzman (67th, 20:21), AlanaMarie Barros (69th, 20:24), Lilly Cory (80th, 20:38), Abby Howard (84th, 20:42), Anna Lucy Buddenhagen (86th, 20:45) and Emily Turner (106th, 21:26). The scoring five totaled 331 points for 14th place of 23 schools in the large school division.

The JV-1 squads toed the line about an hour later. The 10th place JV boys were led by Riley Nickols who ran a smartly paced race on his way to an 18:54 49th place finish – a 40 second improvement on his previous best 5K. Riley was closely followed by Patrick Cox (50th, 18:55). The Girls JV-1, made up exclusively of 9th and 10th graders, raced to a 5th place team finish with personal bests run by nearly every runner: Elena Thoman (26th, 21:27), Lindsey Weyant (29th, 21:32), Grace Burnett (32nd, 21:37), Grace O’Meara (34th, 21:39), Lilia Scudamore (44th, 21:51), and Maisie Moskowitz (55th, 22:06).

On Saturday, East Angel Cross Country, minus its Varsity and JV-1 runners, would take on the tough competition at the St. Vrain Invitational in Lyons over the challenging Lyons High School cross country course. In Girls Varsity competition, the Angels were led by sophomore Serene Mather (82nd in 22:54), followed by freshmen Julia Schor (126th, 23:48), Maya Nussbaumer (133rd, 23:52), and Maya Winfield (142nd, 24:17). Despite the challenging conditions, junior Henry Kaufman ran to a new personal best of 20:05 for 152nd place in the Varsity Boys race; sophomore Jack Beardshear also ran a personal best time of 20:41 for 169th.  For the second time in as many weeks, Teddy Hickenlooper was the first Angel to run across the finish line in a JV boys race, this time running 21:00 and 74th place over the St. Vrain 5K course. Ninth graders Clara Lorenzo (26:18, 93rd) and Laurel Supplee (27:01, 114th) were the first Angels in the JV Girls race, which completed the weekend of racing for Denver East High School Cross Country.

This week brings East two opportunities to run seasonal best times as the squads will be split between the inaugural Nighthawk Invitational hosted by Northfield High School at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Thursday and the Arvada West Invitational at the Stenger Soccer Complex in Arvada on Friday. Both courses promise to be flat and fast. Check the website for meet entries this week; Varsity runners selected for the Rim Rock Invitational in Kansas (September 21st – 24th) should expect to hear from Coach Kohuth at the beginning of this week.

Help with the tent

Each meet, we need parents to take the tent to the meet (on the early side so kids have shade and a place for their stuff) and then to take it home from the meet and pass off to the next parent. The task is not difficult and the kids set it up and pack it up for you.

We need someone to get the tent after today’s meet and take it to St. Vrain’s in Lyons by 7:15 Saturday morning and then someone to take it back to Denver.

You can sign up to help here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ucHoULNb2yxzpwhRtWYVhAU6LxyUjONUleTzUh3hXI0/edit?usp=sharing

Keep in mind DPS does not allow the tent to be on the bus, so we rely on parents every week to help.

As always, you can email Jennifer with questions.

Here’s to another great weekend of running!

9/1-9/2 Recap: Wash Park, Arapahoe, Centaurus

East Angel Cross Country had a busy start to the Labor Day weekend, spread across 13 races at three different meets.

On Friday, the Open Girls and Open Boys 2-mile races at the Washington Park Invite would kick things off as temperatures hovered near 90 degrees. The Girls Team would race to a 6th place finish led by the impressive debut performance of freshman Maya Nussbaumer who finished 12th with a time of 15:36. Sophomore Teddy Hickenlooper opened his season with a 27th place finish in 13:09 to lead the boys to an 8th place finish.

In the Varsity Girls 5K at Wash Park, the all 9th grader team of Isabella Garcia, Claire Ely, Maya Winfield, Charlie Hite, and Clara Lonrenzo scored a 10th place team finish overall against their more experienced competition. The boys, similarly depleted of varsity experience at other races, were led by freshman Cyrus Jenkins-Nieto who finished 78th in 21:18.

Meanwhile, things were also getting started at the Arapahoe Warrior Invitational under similarly sultry conditions. There, things kicked off with the Boys Frosh/Soph race. Showing the same team leading form as the week prior, sophomore Will Daley ran to a 13th place finish in 18:41. Will was backed up by freshmen Ian Trautwein (19:11, 21st) and Xander Pacini (19:33, 26th) and sophomore Riley Nickols (19:34, 28th) for a 6th place finish of 25 teams. The Frosh/Soph Girls finished 2nd of 25 teams! The tight Angel pack included freshman Lilia Scudamore (17th, 22:24), sophomore Elena Thoman (19th, 22:41), freshmen Grace Burnett (22nd, 22:47) and Christina Doolan (23rd, 22:48), sophomore Maisie Moskowitz (26th, 22:51) and freshman Grace O’Meara (27th, 22:52). With most runners divided across other meets and races, the Angels ran only a handful of runners in the other races at Arapahoe. Notable performances came from a pair of East juniors; Lilly Cory (21:59) and Emily Turner (22:06) rolled over the trails and through the creek crossings at deKoevend Park in the fastest times for East girls for the day.

On Saturday morning, most of Denver East’s Varsity girls and boys took an early bus to Waneka Lake Park for the very competitive Centaurus Invitational. The Girls ran to a 7th place finish of 23 teams, finishing only behind teams ranked in the top-10 in the State in their respective divisions. Senior Laurel Kruger led the Angels with a 21st place finish in 20:10. Freshman AlanaMarie Barros finished in 20:50 for 37th, followed by a group of Angels who ran together for most of the 5K: senior Nell Salzman (21:17, 46th), junior Lilly Cory (21:20, 51st), sophomore Anna Lucy Buddenhagen (21:25, 53rd) and freshman Abigael Howard (21:42, 60th). For the boys, senior Harrison Scudamore raced to a second place finish in 15:50, behind only the top ranked runner in Colorado. Sophomore Asher Hoyt (17:08, 16th) was the top underclassmen in the race. Senior Jackson Adams (18:41, 67th) and sophomore Elijah Bruggeman (19:01, 81st) also had solid races and the Angel Boys finished 10th of 23 teams.
