Well, maybe the only thing surprising about the bus fiasco last Friday is that we went this far into the season without a major transportation issue. Big shout out to all the students and parents who rallied to get the team all the way up to Greeley for the last invitational of the season.
The Flyin’ Ryan was a new meet and course for the Angels, added to the schedule because the course will host the Region 4 Championship in a couple weeks. The course seemed like one on which some fast times would be run, but the combination of hot weather, some stretches with challenging footing, and course length (lack of markings?) moderated speeds a bit. And in a bit of a twist for a meet of this size (24 teams, predominantly smaller schools), there were not classifications – just a boys race and a girls race.
In the Boys race, the first three runners got a bit away from seniors Henry Bennett and Isaiah Springer, who both then closed well to take 4th in 16:48 and 5th in 16:54 respectively – a bit of a bounce back race for the pair. Junior Emery Wagner seems to be finding his form at the end of the season, finishing 20th in 17:38. Senior Kyle Kojima took 24th in 17:42, sophomore Tre Even 34th in 18:07, and senior Mason Harper 35th in 18:08. Freshman Liam Gerber made what was essentially a varsity debut with his 37th place finish in 18:16, while sophomore Finley Knight showed his toughness again with a 42nd place finish in 18:27. Freshman Evan Mucharsky-O’Boyle again had a solid race taking 58th in 18:58 after having not raced in a few weeks, while his classmate Noah Erwin secured 59th in 19:01. The boys finished 3rd of 24 teams.
Somewhat like the Boys race, there was a significant gap from the lead runner back to the chase pack. Denver East seniors Scout Chomas and Julieta Ochoa were right in the mix of that chase pack, eventually securing 6th and 7th place in near matching times of 19:16 and 19:17. Juniors Corrine Kennedy and Lola Carhart took 10th in 19:45 and 12th in 19:51. Ninth-grader Tessa Fe Morris made her varsity debut by joining the scoring-5 with her 14th place finish in 20:03 – a remarkable time for the day. Sophomore Lila Brown took 16th in 20:07, 9th grader Charlotte Clark 30th in 21:14, sophomore Ainslie Mohr 35th in 21:33, 9th-grader Norah Dysart 44th in 22:14, and sophomore Imogen Nemitz 58th in 23:16. With five runners in the top-14, the Angels rather easily took the team title with 39 points, ahead of Regional rival Rocky Mountain High School with 59 points and sixteen other teams.
Learning the eccentricities of the Greeley course will serve the Angels well when they return for the regional championship. Now the Angels will be fully focused on Championship season, starting with the City League Championship on October 16. The Angels will be racing for Varsity and JV titles on the Washington Park course, which will be the final race for our JV runners.
