Flyin’ Ryan Invitational Recap

Well, maybe the only thing surprising about the bus fiasco last Friday is that we went this far into the season without a major transportation issue. Big shout out to all the students and parents who rallied to get the team all the way up to Greeley for the last invitational of the season.

The Flyin’ Ryan was a new meet and course for the Angels, added to the schedule because the course will host the Region 4 Championship in a couple weeks. The course seemed like one on which some fast times would be run, but the combination of hot weather, some stretches with challenging footing, and course length (lack of markings?) moderated speeds a bit. And in a bit of a twist for a meet of this size (24 teams, predominantly smaller schools), there were not classifications – just a boys race and a girls race.

In the Boys race, the first three runners got a bit away from seniors Henry Bennett and Isaiah Springer, who both then closed well to take 4th in 16:48 and 5th in 16:54 respectively – a bit of a bounce back race for the pair. Junior Emery Wagner seems to be finding his form at the end of the season, finishing 20th in 17:38. Senior Kyle Kojima took 24th in 17:42, sophomore Tre Even 34th in 18:07, and senior Mason Harper 35th in 18:08. Freshman Liam Gerber made what was essentially a varsity debut with his 37th place finish in 18:16, while sophomore Finley Knight showed his toughness again with a 42nd place finish in 18:27. Freshman Evan Mucharsky-O’Boyle again had a solid race taking 58th in 18:58 after having not raced in a few weeks, while his classmate Noah Erwin secured 59th in 19:01. The boys finished 3rd of 24 teams.

Somewhat like the Boys race, there was a significant gap from the lead runner back to the chase pack. Denver East seniors Scout Chomas and Julieta Ochoa were right in the mix of that chase pack, eventually securing 6th and 7th place in near matching times of 19:16 and 19:17. Juniors Corrine Kennedy and Lola Carhart took 10th in 19:45 and 12th in 19:51. Ninth-grader Tessa Fe Morris made her varsity debut by joining the scoring-5 with her 14th place finish in 20:03 – a remarkable time for the day. Sophomore Lila Brown took 16th in 20:07, 9th grader Charlotte Clark 30th in 21:14, sophomore Ainslie Mohr 35th in 21:33, 9th-grader Norah Dysart 44th in 22:14, and sophomore Imogen Nemitz 58th in 23:16. With five runners in the top-14, the Angels rather easily took the team title with 39 points, ahead of Regional rival Rocky Mountain High School with 59 points and sixteen other teams.

Learning the eccentricities of the Greeley course will serve the Angels well when they return for the regional championship. Now the Angels will be fully focused on Championship season, starting with the City League Championship on October 16. The Angels will be racing for Varsity and JV titles on the Washington Park course, which will be the final race for our JV runners.

Rim Rock Classic Invitational Recap

The East Angels made the long drive to Lawrence, Kansas the weekend before last for the Rim Rock Classic. The iconic University of Kansas course at Rim Rock Farm is different from any course in Colorado, featuring rolling hills, mowed prairie grass, two covered bridges, and the famous Cemetery Hill late in the third mile of the course. The Angels got to test themselves against some of the best teams from Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma. And in this year’s addition, the Angels had to test their metal against some serious heat and humidity as the day wore on.

In all the years Denver East has made the trip to Rim Rock, the JV Girls have always impressed – finishing no worse than second as a team and always with a couple girls among the top 3 individuals. This year was no different. It didn’t take long for the pair of ninth grader Tessa Fe Morris and sophomore Fiona Jeong to establish themselves in the lead. The former went on to win in 19:39 with the later right behind in 19:51 for 2nd. Ninth-grader Charlotte Clark kept the throttle on for the Angels with her 4th place finish in 20:33, and Ainslie Mohr added another top finish in 6th in 20:45. Depth came from sophomore Emma Maldonado-Ramos who moved up about a dozen place in the last mile to finish in 31st at 21:59, while ninth graders Cate Carhart and Norah Dysart finished in 44th at 22:16 and 52nd at 22:38.01. Despite a meager 44 points in the 30-team field, the Angels finished second to an impressive Millard West High School team out of Nebraska, who had 35 points.

A young Boys JV team finished 6th of 44 teams with 206 points. This was the second-best finish for the Angels in the JV Boys division the team has ever had – all the more impressive because all team classifications (Gold, Blue and Crimson) were combined into a single JV race this year. The East pack featured freshman Noah Erwin in 14th at 18:02 with classmate Elias Striker joining him on the top 25 podium with a 20th place finish at 18:10. Sophomore Finley Knight held the strong form he has shown all season for 40th in 18:25, while junior Zach Smiles and sophomore Luke Rasquinha landed 80th in 19:02 and 82nd in 19:07. Senior Abraham Morginsky rounded out the group in 88th at 19:10.

The elite Gold division races were held midday, by which time things were definitely heating up. The East Angel girls got out smartly, moved up nicely in the second mile, and held on through the tough final mile for another 2nd place team finish – which is where the Angels have landed a few times at this meet.  Junior Corrine Kennedy led the way in 14th at 19:27, followed by junior Lola Carhart, who had one of the best races of her career with a 25th place finish in 19:47. Senior Julieta Ochoa crossed the line right behind Carhart in 26th in 19:48. Seniors Mary Clare Nussbaum and Scout Chomas were 34th in 19:59 and 38th in 20:08 respectively, while sophomore Lila Brown crossed the line in 60th in 20:36 in the 25 team, 172 runner competition.

With one runner sidelined with injury and another dropping out with heat exhaustion, it was a bit of a rougher outing for the Varsity Boys. Despite the heat, the race got out fast, and all Angel boys were outside of the top 65 going through the first mile. Senior Isaiah Springer set the pace for East in the second half, moving up to 34th in 16:49. Senior Henry Bennett took 80th in 17:25.08. The pack closed with junior Emery Wagner 103rd in 17:36, senior Kyle Kojima 109th in 17:42, and sophomore Tre Even 182nd in 18:32. Despite the relative struggles of the day, the Angels managed a solid 15th place finish of 38 teams in the elite Gold Division.

This late posted recap will be followed by a late recap of the Flyin’ Ryan Invitation from this past Friday…. Stay tuned!

Saturday Long Run WITH CHOCOLATE MILK AND LEMONADE!

For anyone who can make it, come get your Saturday long run in with teammates and enjoy some chocolate milk and/or lemonade afterwards!

We will meet at 8:45 a.m. in the East student lot and drive down to Magna Carta Park (only about 20 minutes from East) to run on the Highline Canal Trail and get some soft surface running in. We’d love to have you if you can make it!

Even if you can’t make it, be sure to get a long run in on your own! If you’re feeling banged up or injured, you can get some or all of these minutes done with cross training if needed.

PLEASE READ ASAP: Transportation Shortage for Greeley

We will only have one bus going to the meet today because of staffing shortages. Varsity runners have first priority for the bus. We will fill up the bus as space allows. If a parent is going to the meet and wants to take their child, that is fine.

If a child wants to drive themself up to the meet, their parent must email Coach Kohuth giving their child permission. skohuth@dpsk12.net

If a child wants to ride with a teammate up to the meet, the parent of any student-athlete passengers must email Coach Kohuth again granting permission to do so. skohuth@dpsk12.net

The bus will leave from the Detroit side of school at 1:15.

If any student is not able to go because of spacing issues, we will let those parents know.

We are so sorry for the inconvenience. We did not find this out until this morning. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Go Angels!
