Bus Situation

Hi Runners and Parents/Guardians,

As we discussed at our kick off potluck, bus transportation has been and will continue to be difficult for all teams. We can assume that runners will need to get themselves to meets via private car for most of the XC season. This can include car pool.

Parents: Please fill out this permission slip and email it to: ruthspano@aol.com or hand deliver it to Coach Kohuth in the counseling center. To sign up for the Arapahoe Meet car pool, click HERE. More details for the Arapahoe Meet will come soon.

For more information on this topic, we just received the following letter from our district director of athletics and want to share it with you.

I am writing to give you an update on the issues we are experiencing right now as we work to provide transportation for extracurricular activities. Because of the severe shortage of bus drivers both in the district and with our contract vendors, we cannot find enough drivers to meet the needs of our student-athletes. Please understand, contrary to rumors being shared, these challenges are not because of any sort of monetary issue. This is a staffing issue. At this time, we simply do not have enough drivers for our buses to meet the demand.

As you may know, this is a well-documented local and national issue. We are desperately trying to find solutions for this situation. To that end, we continue to recruit aggressively in an effort to get our transportation system to a state that better serves our students. This includes DPS increasing the pay for bus drivers to hopefully attract more applicants. We are also working on solutions with our outside transportation providers.

Please know that student safety, along with student participation in extracurricular activities, are very important to us and to our students and families. We value student participation in the invaluable learning experiences of extracurricular programs, activities and competitions.

Our athletic directors will work to provide as much advance notice as possible when we are not able to provide district transportation.

We are revising our protocols for when we cannot provide transportation. We are also prioritizing trips of 25 miles or more. We will continue to look for ways to meet our transportation needs and apologize for any difficulties this places on you and your student(s). Please contact your school administrator and/or athletic director if you have any questions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
