Hey Runners!!  Hopefully all of you are finding ways to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and get in some miles!  Please send pictures of yourself and your running buddies (human or other, following safety guidelines) so we can share them!  Please check the training plan on the website by clicking here xc summer training schedule 2020— and please keep a training log!  It is even more important than ever that you are keeping track of what your training!  Since we cannot be with you, we need to see logs so we know how to adjust your training.  We will have more information soon on how to share that with us.

Please stay tuned for some upcoming google chats—I was having some technical difficulties, but think I have it figured out.

If you are going to be a senior and would like to be a captain, please send me a letter explaining why and what would make you a good leader for this team.  I have received several already, and want to make sure I know who is interested.  Please make sure I have your letter no later than June 1.  You can send your letter to: steven_kohuth@dpsk12.org

Happy running thoughts until we talk soon!

Cross Country Updates

Hey Runners!!  As you are painfully aware, the spring sports seasons have been canceled. I wanted to let you know all the coaches miss you and wish we could all be running together! Until we can do that, I want give you some updates and information about the upcoming cross country season—as far as we know, the fall season will happen, though it may be somewhat different than we are used to.  We need to make sure that we use this time to be getting in shape—while being safe and socially distanced.  While we have the potential to be really good next season, the work needs to be done this summer.  I am working on building our meet schedule, and we will be sending out recommended workouts and training plans soon.  Please be watching for upcoming virtual meetings or hangouts or races or other ways for us to stay connected until we are able to all get together!

If you are a rising senior and interested in being a captain next season, please send me (steven_kohuth@dpsk12.org) an explanation of why you would like to be a captain and what would make you a good one.

Please keep an eye on the website for updates—the training schedule will be up very soon and we’ll be updating every week or so. Get out and run with your dog or your parents or your siblings and be safe and stay healthy and hopefully we’ll all be running together soon!

Follow up – Angel Invite

Thanks to everyone, the Angel Invite was a successful meet!  The dozens of parent volunteers made the meet go as smooth as possible.  We are so grateful for our parents and their willingness to help the team!

Here are some stats from our meet:

  • We hosted 28 teams (including East)
  • 561 runners finished the Angel Invite
  • In our fundraising efforts, we made $153 from the Kona Ice Truck, $260 from Chipotle and $190 from merchandise sales!
  • We had over 48 parent volunteers, 8 coaches, 2 operations volunteers, 2 DPS athletics employees, 2 East mountain bike team members, 2 athletic trainers, an athletic director and an East administrator.  All of whom worked seamlessly together to make the Angel Invite happen.
  • Last but not least, we had our amazing East Angel xc runners.  Of course, they are accomplished runners, but they also were excellent hosts to their guests from the other 27 schools.

We have the honor of hosting the regional meet on Friday, October 18.  Now that we are warmed up, let’s do this again!  Please volunteer by clicking here:  Volunteer Sign Up for Regional Meet  School will not be in session on Friday, Oct 18.

Thank you for all you do for the Denver East Cross Country experience!

City Park Survey

We forwarded a link to provide input on the City Park remodel in hopes that you can weigh in to make sure that the high school runners don’t lose access to key parts of the park. Parent and volunteer coach Dave Scudamore made some notes that we thought might useful to share in case in terms of what might impact our ability to use the fields. You should, of course, look at the drawings and draw your own conclusions of what will best meet community needs.

Here are Coach Scudamore’s thoughts:

We need to warn team of threats to XC course and what few areas there are to train at City Park:

#6: we do not want the fields in the southeast corner of the park to become a protected “natural meadow.” Preserve places for kids to run and play informally in the park instead.

#8: Option number 3 reduces car traffic the most – probably in the interest of runners.

#11: Option 1 or 3 (I prefer 3), both have 6’ crusher fines trail for running.

#13: Do not select option 4. We have 2 fields in the whole park we can use – the rest are reserved for soccer, ultimate, etc. If the SE corner becomes “Natural Meadow,” one of our fields, and a big chunk of our home course, are taken from us.

Open feedback for survey: see above, mainly #6 and #13.

Thank you for taking the survey and helping to keep City Park user friendly for the East XC Angels!  http://: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/J3QT9Z2

State Meet Details

Arrive at East teachers’ parking lot on Friday, Oct 27 at 1:15.

State Meet Itinerary

Be sure to bring warm clothes for before and after your race.  Hats, gloves and blankets might be good ideas. Bring healthy snacks. Since the races are early we won’t have a team breakfast, bring what you want to eat, if anything, for breakfast.  We will stop for lunch on our way out of town, bring about $10 for lunch and money for any race souvenirs or concessions you might want to purchase.

Coach Delaney has done some research and reported that this is the first time in 23 years that the girls team has gone to State.  He thinks this might be the FIRST time both teams have ever gone to State together.  Congratulations to the East Cross Country team and coaches of 2017 – you are making fabulous Angel history!  We want to get used to this new trend of sending both teams to State!!

Field Trip for State Team on Monday!

State runners and alternates,

The current forecast for the races at the State XC meet is showing temperatures between 31 and 36 degrees. To be sure you have the appropriate cold weather racing attire, we will have a field trip (shopping trip) to Runner’s Roost after practice (around 5:00) on Monday, Oct 23.

Coach Kohuth has contacted the store and they will set aside appropriate race gear such as headbands, hats, gloves and arm warmers.

If you want to attend this field trip, please bring money to school and have your parent send an email to Ruth,  ruthspano@aol.com,  giving you permission to ride in private cars (driven by coaches, parents or students) to Runner’s Roost.  If these items are cost prohibitive, please let Coach Kohuth or Ruth know.

We want all of our runners to be able to run safely and comfortably within the CHSAA guidelines.

Potluck tomorrow 10/4

This Wednesday is the second to last athlete potluck. Keep in mind that whatever you are assigned, please bring enough food or drink for 8-10 people. This is intended to be dinner for all the athletes who show up, so please come with food to share. (pastas, salads, pizzas, buckets of chicken, lasagnas all work well and should be inexpensive). And to the 9th graders, next year’s freshmen will be feeding you!

Runners who are attending should bring items to share as follows:

9th—main course

Weds dinner from 6-8pm will be at the Buddenhagen home 2865 Clermont St.

Note that next Monday will be the last dinner at the Weber home 1563 Lafayette St

Parents:  If you are looking for something interesting to do while your runner is potlucking, there will be a DPS School Board Candidate Forum on Monday, Oct 9 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at East High School in the Commons (cafeteria).   The event will be hosted by the East Angel Friends and Alumni Foundation.  Learn about the different candidates running for At Large and Districts 3 & 4 (East HS is in District 4) seats on the board. Information on Go Bond and the Green Roof Initiative will also be available.
