Tent transport needed Saturday

We really need a parent or parents to take the tent to the meet on Saturday at Green Mountain High School and bring it back. The tent should be there by 8:00 am for a 9:00 start. Text or call Dave at 303-507-6117 to make arrangements. We have 40 runners tomorrow who will be really grateful for the shade.

Thanks for helping our athletes!

Season Launch!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting on Thursday evening.

Here are a few reminders and a few requests:

TENT: The team really needs parents to help bring the team tent to and from meets. It is fine to bring it one way and for another parent to bring it back. You can sign up at this link.

UNIFORM: If your runner would like to own uniform shorts, warm ups, or a team backpack, please follow the link under Gear Shop. You must order by Thursday Aug 30.

SCHEDULE: The team calendar has schedule information and locations of meets as they become available. If you notice anything missing or that looks wrong, please let Jennifer know. You can click on the + on the bottom right corner and add the calendar information to your own device, which should also let you map to meets.

SHOE NIGHT: We have a shopping night fundraiser at Runners Roost on Colorado Blvd. at Mexico on Monday evening. Please RSVP here if you are coming so we can be sure to have enough pizza and staff on hand to help. Runners and families will get a discount on all purchases and the team will get money back.

PICTURE SHARING: Please take pictures if you are at meets and share them at our team page: https://eastcrosscountry2018.shutterfly.com. (You may need to request to join the group).

All these links can be found at link for volunteer opportunities on the website.

We look forward to great meets this weekend!

Thursday’s potluck details have changed!

Runners and Families,

The details for our beginning of the year potluck have changed to do room and scheduling conflicts. It is now just a meeting without a potluck.  Please note the following:

Time:  8:30 pm

Date:  Thursday, August 23, 2018 (same)

Location:  Commons (same)

Potluck:  We decided not to have the potluck due to the late start time of the meeting.  There will be more potlucks throughout the season!  We will serve cookies!

We apologize for the changes and look forward to seeing runners and their parents/guardians on Thursday night.

Parent volunteers:  If you want to help sell swag or check out uniforms, please show up at 7:30 in the hallway by the Commons.

Please note:  If you are running in the meets this weekend, you can pick up your uniform at 7:45pm outside of the Commons before the meeting.  If you are not running in the meets, you can pick up your uniform on Monday after school.

GO ANGELS!!

Attendance Policy

As we head into the competitive season it becomes increasingly important that athletes attend all practices. We would like to remind the team of the attendance policy, as posted on on the policy page of our website. Specifically:

  • Athletes missing a practice for a non-medical or non-academic reason will not be eligible to compete on Varsity that week but may be considered for JV competition.
  • Athletes with two or more absences in a week, excused or unexcused, will not compete in any race that week.
  • Athletes who do miss multiple weeks of races due to multiple unexcused absences will not receive PE credit.

Excused absences are limited to academic conflicts, injury/illness (with note from parent, trainer or doctor) and medical appointments (please make routine dental, orthodontic, and medical appointments outside of practice times whenever possible). Missing practice due to activities that cannot be scheduled for a time outside of practice (other after school activities, work) will only be excused at the coaches’ discretion and with prior approval. Limited exceptions to this policy may be made for students showing evidence of completing the team workout outside of the regularly scheduled practice time.

Correction from the 2nd annual time trial & alumni run recap.  Ira Weiss is from the class of 2016, not 2018.  We apologize for that, but think Ira might appreciate this mistake  several years from now.

Recap and Results for the 2018 time trials & alumni run

For some, it was yet another hard effort among many previous efforts inside the friendly confines of Denver City Park. For others, it was their first test as high school cross country runners. And for a few enthusiastic alumni, it was a chance to prove their fitness one more time while socializing with their former coaches and teammates. For all, it was an auspicious beginning to the 2018 cross country season.

Denver East is coming off what is largely considered the most successful year ever for the program. In 2017, the Girls won the DPS City Meet, finished second in 5A Region 1, qualified for the State Meet for the first time in a long, long time, and went on to finish 16th in the State. The Boys team finished 2ndin the DPS City meet, were surprise qualifiers for State Meet with a 4thplace finish in 5A Region 1, also finished 16that State, and saw their top runner go on to qualify for Footlocker Nationals out of the Midwest Region and finish 13thin the national championship.

At the 2-mile Time Trial and Alumni Celebration on Thursday, outstanding performances indicate that the coming season may be even better than the last.

The Boys look to have a potent 1-2 punch up front, as juniors Asher Hoyt and Will Daley came across the line in 10:39 and 10:54 respectively. The next six boys finished within 16 seconds of each other, led by juniors Riley Nickols in 12:01 and Elijah Bruggeman in 12:02 , and followed closely by sophomore Xander Pacini, 9thgrader Eamon Nussbaum, junior Jack Beardsheer, and sophomore Cyrus Jenkins-Nieto. The times of these boys compare quite favorably to last year, indicating that this pack may be very competitive in the meets to come.

The Girls Team definitely looks like they will have a very tight pack that will be competitive throughout the season, with the first 8 girls finishing within 18 seconds of each other. Sophomore Abigael Howard did just enough to win, edging out junior Anna Lucy Buddenhagen in identical times of 13:22. That pair was followed closely by sophomore Maya Winfield, junior Elena Thoman, sophomores Maya Nussbaumer and Julia Schor, and a pair of ninth graders – Grace Chambers, and Ellison Mucharsky-O’Boyle. Like the boys, their pack time was significantly faster than the year before.

In the Battle of the Classes, the 11thgraders (class of 2020) took the boys title with the team of Hoyt, Daley, Nickols, Bruggeman, and Beardsheer scoring a mere 17 points between them, with the 10thgraders taking second with 61 points and the 9thgraders finishing a respectable third with 69 points. For the girls, it was the 10thgraders (class of 2021) dominating the day with the team of Howard, Winfield, Nussbaumer, Schor, and Lilia Scudamore scoring 24 points to 52 points for the 11thgrade, 62 points for the 9thgraders, and 102 points for the 12thgraders.

Representing the Alumni out on the course were Nikita Cordier (Class of 2016), Laurel Kruger (Class of 2018), and Rhianna Herd (Class of 2016).  Helping at the finish line were Audrey McGlothlen (Class of 2018) and  Ira Weiss (Class of 2018),  and we got impromptu support from Simon Bertron (Class of 2015). Thank-you to all the alumni and families who supported the team by celebrating at The Goods for dinner; we made some money to support the team this season.

In the week ahead, our Varsity and top JV runners will travel to the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede in Colorado Springs, which is run on the State Meet course on Friday, August 24th. Most of the rest of our JV will scrimmage at the Ram Run hosted by Green Mountain High School of Saturday, August 25th. Please follow the website for details. Also this week with be the Team and Parent Potluck at East on Thursday, August 23rd, where lots of information on the upcoming season will be shared.
